MORE ABOUT MY COACHING

I work virtually with students in high school, college, university, and graduate school. Through my holistic approach to student success, I will work with you to uncover and overcome challenges that impact your confidence and success in school. Our work will be grounded in self-regulated learning, which is an evidence-based process of taking control of your own learning by defining what success looks like for you, then experimenting with strategies and monitoring your progress to gain insight and move more strategically towards your goals. Throughout this process, I will draw on a variety of techniques and strategies to help you discover your ideal path forward.

In our sessions, I will strive to be empathetic, compassionate, and non-judgmental. It is important to me that you feel you are in a safe and accepting space, where you are free to be honest, share your struggles, and celebrate your successes. At the same time, I will hold your goals and intentions in mind as we work together and, where necessary, I can act as an accountability partner helping you to get back on track, maintain or adjust your momentum, or redefine your goals and intentions.

If you are keen to learn and grow and willing to experiment and engage in honest self-reflection, then I’d love to work with you!

Please note:

  • If you are a post-secondary student with a disability who receives funding for academic strategist (or similar) services, you can use your funding to pay for my coaching.

  • Although I regularly work with students with ADHD and/or mental health conditions, I am not an ADHD coach or a counsellor. To maximize the benefit of the work we do together, please consider seeking appropriate help (e.g., counselling) for any mental health conditions that are significantly impacting your functioning.

TESTIMONIALS

As a university student at UVic with a learning disability, I find it challenging learning new concepts and reading. Lizz helped me with strategies breaking things down in a simplified manner so I didn't feel as overwhelmed as I did at the beginning of the course. I struggle at school but with the help of Lizz...I was able to get a 92% in PSYC 100a at UVic. My highest grade ever, and I am now a successful 3rd year university student.

COACHING FAQS

IS STUDENT SUCCESS COACHING THE RIGHT SERVICE FOR ME?

If you answer YES to the following questions, you are likely in the right place!

  • Do I want to improve my learning?

  • Am I willing to put time and effort into achieving my goals?

  • Am I open to trying new approaches to studying and learning?

  • Am I looking for someone who will guide me by asking questions and offering suggestions rather than telling me what to do?

  • Am I comfortable with the idea that change and development take time, experimentation, and learning from past experiences (good and bad)?

WHAT SHOULD I DO TO PREPARE FOR MY SESSIONS?

  • Spend some time thinking about what you want out of your session and what would be the most helpful to focus on during our time together. Some questions to guide your thinking: Am I struggling in any of my classes? What tasks do I have coming up that are unfamiliar, difficult, or demanding? What challenges did I encounter since our last session? What would I like to improve? What is something I can do during this session that I would otherwise put off?

  • Please be ready and online five minutes before your session starts and check that your microphone and video work. Make sure you have any documents you want to share with me open on your computer. Technology problems do happen to all of us, but five minutes of preparation can help to maximize our time together.

  • All sessions will take place online via Zoom. You will receive a Zoom link in your calendar invite.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT TO HAPPEN DURING A COACHING SESSION?

Each session with a learning coach will look similar, as each session format is based on engaging students with self-regulated learning strategies and processes:

  • Check in

  • Set goal/intention for the session

  • Work toward goal

  • Evaluate progress so far

  • Continue work toward goal or other goal

  • Wrap-up session/final questions

HOW OFTEN WILL WE MEET?

I recommend starting with weekly 1-hour sessions, then we can adjust from there. For funded students, the total time we spend together will depend on your funding. For non-funded students, we can discuss a package of sessions that is appropriate for you (e.g., 12-session or 6-session package).

WHAT ARE YOUR PAYMENT & CANCELLATION POLICIES?

  • Making appointments: Your initial free 30-minute consultation can be booked through Practice. From there, we will decide on a time that works best for regularly occurring sessions, and I will schedule the appointments or send you a link to schedule your own appointments.

  • Payment: I will discuss payment options with you in the initial consultation or first session. My preferred method of payment is Interac e-transfer to lizzalexandercoaching@gmail.com, although credit card is possible.

  • Cancelling appointments: If you need to cancel a session, there is no charge if you cancel at least 24 hours before the appointment start time. If you cancel within 24 hours of the appointment or miss your appointment, you may be charged a cancellation/no-show fee equivalent to the cost of the session. I understand emergencies happen, so please contact me by email as soon as possible if you miss a session due to an emergency.

  • Late policy: If you are late to your session, the session will still end at the scheduled end time, and you will be charged the full session price. In some cases, time can be made up at the end if I do not have another appointment. If am late or cancel your scheduled session, I will communicate with you by email as soon as possible in order to make up the missed time or to reschedule if needed.
